They are not easily available for sale but are an easy DIY project. The only drawback is that they need to be lined every single time soap is poured into them. This does not have to be a problem as silicone liners can be custom made to fit into the wooden molds. For soap makers who appreciate the traditional methods and aesthetics of soap making, wooden molds remain a cherished option. With proper care and maintenance, a good wooden mold can last for years, making it a worthwhile investment for your soap-making toolkit - mine are as old as 15 years.

Calculating Loaf Mold Volume

If you are new to soapmaking and you are not sure how much oil to use to fit in a particular soap mold, there is a simple formula you can use to calculate it. Firstly, you find out the volume of your mold, ie is it's capacity in litres. This will give you an indication of how how much contents (oils, lye, water, additives) will fit in your mold.  We do this by measuring the INSIDE length, width, and depth of the mold. For example, let's take our silicone loaf mold: Volume = length x width x height of soap pour (in cm) 25cm x 8.5cm x 6.2cm = 1320. This is the volume of the soap that will fit in the above example mold.
  We then take the maths further and multiply the volume by 0.7 to get the oil amount that will fit in your mold. Oil Weight:  1330 x 0.7 = 922g. This simply means that your mold will take about 922g oil weight. The difference between the oil weight and total mold volume will be used up by lye, water and other additives. If water discount is applied, the oil weight will be increased.
